HAMMERS
One day while we were roofing in North Hatley, Quebec
all the hammers fell briefly in unison. This is a song
about life's "hammers".

Saw the swing of the hammer
Heard the crack of the ball
Saw the tenement tumble
Saw the tenement fall
Saw the baby in the manger
He was sleeping through it all
I read a story
About a man in a room
I guess he spoke his mind, but
I guess he spoke too soon
Well he could've kept them guessing
Instead of howling at the moon
Shoved my hands in my pockets
And I shuffled in time
Took my p l ace at the back of
The unemployment line
Standing like a statue
Deaf dumb and blind
Saw the swing of the hammer
Heard the crack of the ball
Saw the tenement tumble
Saw the tenement fall
Saw the baby in the manger
He was sleeping through it all
